China has a rich and long tradition of carpet weaving. In 1923, Frank Michaelian set up a rug weaving faciltiy in Tinjian where he produced handknotted carpets up until the Communist overthrow of the Chinese government in the late 1930s.
In the early 1980s, Teddy Sumner, grandson of the founder and current owner of M&K Rugs, re-established ties in China and built a weaving facility in Shandong Province.

Bringing in experts from Turkey and the USA, the Chinese workers were taught to handspin yarn, use vegetable dyes, and weave by hand various rug structures not indigenous to China. A “design laboratory” was created, and M&K Rugs continues to bring weave traditions and materials from all over the world in this tradition.
